From Clinical Innovation to the Market

Choices of a StartUp to Navigate the current Regulations

Fitting a promising innovative technology into solving a relevant clinical problem requires many critical choices to consider early on.

Based on a real-world example in measuring cardiac output in heart patients, Arthur Bouwman, cardio-anaesthesiologist and co-founder of a medical device start-up, and Claus Schaffrath, partner at a medical device consultancy, describe clinical and regulatory choices, and their consequences for bringing a medical device to the market.

A duo-presentation by professor Arthur Bouwman, cardiac anesthesiologist, Catharina Hospital / co-founder, Amazec Photonics and Claus Schaffrath, partner at MD squared B.V.

Since 2021 Amazec Photonics focuses on developments in ultrasensitive temperature sensing using photonics in the medical domain. It is envisioned this integrated photonics technology unleashes new modalities with regard to monitoring, diagnosis and treatments with a major impact on healthcare. It is our ambition to become a global leader for medical applications using integrated photonics.

About Arthur Bouwman
Dr. R. Arthur Bouwman is working as cardiac anesthesiologist in the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. He combines his clinical work with research in the eMTIC collaboration and he was recently appointed as part-time professor at the department of electrical engineering (signal processing systems group). He has a strong background in cardiovascular patient monitoring and clinical decision support in acute settings. In his research he focuses on new sensor technology, predictive decision support systems, clinical workflow integration and value-based healthcare optimization. In his research group he supervises several PhD students and he is (co)author of several scientific publications. In 2021 he founded with Pim Kat, Ton Backx and Erik Korsten, Amazec Photonics: a startup company that focuses on high-resolution temperature sensing for Cardiovascular Monitoring & diagnostics using integrated Photonics.
